When did work begin on the development of the BMW M5 and how many kilometres were covered during testing? Two to three years must be allowed for testing the development of a BMW M. In some cases predecessor vehicles are used in the first phase, enabling initial engine tests to be carried out, for example. However, this is just a short phase. The fine tuning then involves the latest models. The development departments for engine, electronics, chassis, etc. each have their own test vehicles to enable them to put the latest technology to the test. All use a 3.0-liter inline-six putting out 376 horses and 545 through an eight-speed auto, and in the case of the M550d sedan it can get to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. That makes each of the white knights in the promo piece both sporty and powerful,…

It’s been a long time coming, but after years of speculation, hope and fear, BMW’s M division has launched their first Diesel cars/SAVs. As if to apologize for the lack of spark plugs, the marketing gurus have branded these new M Diesels as “M Performance Automobiles.” We’re hard at work trying to determine if this is a cypher with encoded meaning. Here’s what we know about the new M diesels so far, and why they may be slightly sub-branded from the M division. A matter of redline. The heart of an M car is always its engine. Historically, M cars have had…

One's a sportscar, the other a city car - pretty much opposite extremes on the spectrum of automotive bodystyles. Do you give them alphanumeric nameplates close to one another? Of course not. You assign them disparate numbers to make room for more models to slot in between. That's just what BMW is doing with its upcoming "i" range, with an i3 at one end and the i8 (star of the recent Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol). So what does it have planned to fit in the middle? According to…

It will not raise any higher when I hold throttle down at 1500rpms. This explains the belt squeal I get when I need to accelerate hard when merging onto the interstate. I thought it was just a loose belt and have checked it several times. Boy is the wife going to be happy when she hears about this one.

    27 Jan 2012 | 7:21 pm
Filed under: Minivan/Van, BMW, Electric, Luxury Imagine you're an auto exec launching a new line of cars. Now, BMW has packed a 5 Series with the next iteration of the technology and taken it on to the open road. This latest ConnectedDrive experiment uses much of the same tech, but beyond the radar and camera systems on the 3er, it includes new ultrasonic scanners and lasers to re-read the road surface, lines and surrounding vehicles. We say "re-read" because like the system…

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Wagon, Crossover, BMW, Diesel, Luxury If you'd like to see more of BMW newly unveiled range of M Diesels, here's your chance.
